摘要

What motivates data management strategies of scientificrncollaborations? In this paper, we argue that infrastructuresrnfor data management are designed to support scientificrnwork per se and to perform a variety of social functions.rnWe present findings from a longitudinal ethnographic casernstudy of a large, multidisciplinary, distributed scientificrnproject studying subseafloor microbial life. A criticalrnelement of this project’s plan for data management is tornconstruct an online portal that includes a data registry andrndata repository. We found that a range of factors motivaternthe construction of these systems and their features. Inrnaddition to scientific concerns for curation and accessibilityrnof diverse and scarce data, we argue that the building of thernregistry and repository is also motivated by social factors.rnOne factor is the attempt to build a community of domainrnresearchers to endure beyond the end of this project inrn2020. Another is the potential use of the registry andrndatabase as tools to demonstrate the productivity of thernproject in negotiations about the allocation of ocean drillingrncruise resources. Considering the social and scientificrnfactors together enriches accounts of how knowledgerninfrastructures are constructed.
