摘要

Information seeking often occurs in groups andrncommunities, and these communities differ in ways thatrnimpact their usefulness to their members. This study usesrngrounded theory and information horizons mapping tornexplore information seeking and sharing in two place-basedrncommunities in Florida, addressing factors associated withrnparticipants’ evaluations of their local communities ofrnsupport. These factors provide insight into parents’rnexpectations of their information worlds and expectationsrnrelated to information behaviors of actors within their localrninformation environments. The study finds similarrnstakeholder groups similar expressions of the belief thatrnsome communities were “better” than others for raisingrnchildren with Down syndrome in both areas, but varyingrnevaluations of their own communities based on personalrnexperiences. Participants agreed on the following factors asrnimportant indicators of a strong local community ofrnsupport: existence and activities of local parent networksrnand organizations, access to quality education and healthrncare, full inclusion in regular education when desired, socialrninclusion of their children into the community at large, andrnemployability for adults with Down syndrome.
