摘要

This study investigates the collaborative informationrnseeking (CIS) behavior among three different user groups:rnLIS students, undergraduates, and a mixture of LIS andrnundergraduate students. Each group consisted of a pair ofrnparticipants. Out of 28 participants, 16 were graduaternstudents of library and information science and 12 werernundergraduates from different majors. Results of this casernstudy revealed that undergraduate groups visited libraryrnwebsite and library databases more frequently than otherrngroups. They had the highest average frequency in readingrnan abstract or a full text article compared to two otherrngroups. Undergraduate groups also held the highest successrnrate. Mixed groups had the highest frequency of verbalrndialogue and spent the longest time on tasks. Most of thernLIS student groups found search results faster and spent thernshortest time on completing tasks and reading the abstractrnand full texts. Surprisingly, LIS groups had the lowestrnsuccess rate among the three groups. Participants describedrnthe positive aspects of collaborative search as gainingrngreater search insights, good learning process, positivernpartnership and being more efficient with task completion.rnThey also pointed out that collaboration drawbacks mayrninclude not having equal control/sharing of keyboard orrnmouse and other obstacles in the collaborative decisionmakingrnprocess. Participants further provided suggestionsrnon database and search engine design to facilitate therncollaborative search process.
