This paper focuses on the results of a two-part survey torninvestigate the needs of potential users of an interface forrnexploring historical narratives. First, the survey askedrnuniversity faculty and K-12 instructors to elucidaternexpectations and desires for an interface facilitating textualrnexploration, particularly of historical narratives. Then, thernsurvey showed participants an experimental interface andrnasked participants to comment on its features. The resultsrnsuggest that there were distinct needs specific to each userrnpopulation in addition to general desires common to bothrngroups. Some areas to emphasize in future designrnimprovements include: more support for collaboration;rnsupport for different modes of engagement; greater supportrnfor historic themes that are traditionally studied in relationrnto slave narratives; and greater customizability. The mainrncontributions of this work are as follows. First, the needs,rnexpectations and perspectives of university faculty and K-rn12 teachers may differ with regards to interfaces for textualrnexploration, and that it is important to tailor interfaces tornsupport their specific needs. Second, this survey providesrninsight concerning how text exploration interfaces might bernemployed in classroom settings, and the features that wouldrnbe needed to support such use.
