摘要

In this study, we explored the effect of time constraint onrninformation acquisition and knowledge acquisition during searchrnin two types of tasks: information understanding (IU) task andrnfact finding (FF) task. A user experiment was conducted.rnParticipants were asked to conducted search tasks of these tworntypes with and without time constraint. The results indicated thatrnwhen no time constraint was set, although users spent significantrnmore time in IU tasks, they produced similar amount ofrninformation and acquired similar amount of self-ratedrnknowledge in IU tasks and FF tasks. When searching under timernconstraint, even though participants produced significantly morerninformation in IU tasks than in FF tasks, they acquired lowerrnlevel of knowledge in IU tasks than in FF tasks. These resultsrnsuggested that it took searchers more time to understand andrninterpret the information they found in IU tasks and they mayrnfirst collect much information for later interpretation when givenrnsevere time constraint in IU tasks, but not in FF tasks.
