Colloidal silica bonded refractory castable has not been widely applied as its demoulding strength is low.Relevant studies have suggested that the addition of gelling agents could increase its demoulding strength, because of its role in the formation of siloxane (Si-O-Si) during the coagulation.This work aims to study the relationship between demoulding strength and the change of chemical bonds of the particles of colloidal silica with and without gelling agents.The influence of different gelling agents (calcium aluminate cement and magnesia) on the chemical bond changes of the colloidal silica (solid content of 30%) has been investigated during the dehydration condensation reaction.The chemical bonds of the particles and phase transformation of colloidal silica are investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD).The experiment results show that the addition of gelling agents promotes the condensation reaction between the particles of colloidal silica, and the introduction of the cations (Ca2+, Al3+, Mg2+) results in the condensation reaction of colloidal silica,forming a three-dimensional network structure, thus increasing the demoulding strength of the castable.
