In this study, medium-grade magnesia, Al metal powder, Si metal powder, and α-Al2O3 are mixed and adding Y2O3 as flux-mineralizer to synthesize fine powder, then magnesia aggregates is added under N2 atmosphere.Nitride coupled reaction synthesis of Mg-a-β-SiAlON was carried out at 1550 ℃.X-Ray Diffraction, scanning electron microscope were utilized to analyze the phase components and microstructures.The impact of different ratios of fine powder and aggregate (7∶3, 6.5∶3.5, 6∶4) was discussed The study results suggest that the synthesis of Mg-α-β-SiAlON benefits from a higher ratio of the fine powder and aggregates, with short columnar structure changing to long prismatic and plate-like structures.Consequently, a completely prismatic structure formed in the synthetic material.
