Continuous, on-line measurement of ammonia slip across the entire width of the duct hasrnbeen demonstrated in multiple coal fired power generating stations. The measurementsrnwere made using an optical tunable diode laser based instrument (TDL). A single diodernlaser and control electronics, housed in one central unit, were used to drive multiple setsrnof remote optics. The optical paths were completely open, allowing average ammoniarnconcentrations to be measured across the entire width of the ducts up to 6 meters (m)rnThe TDL is a spectroscopic instrument that makes absorption based measurements. Therntechnique and hardware are sufficiently robust to allow accurate measurements to bernmade under a variety of plant working conditions (varying dust levels, processrntemperatures, etc.) while operating continuously over prolonged periods of time.rnLong and short term trends in ammonia slip have been examined and compared withrnother relevant parameters. The availability of continuous, spatially resolved ammonia sliprndata at multiple locations has permitted a detailed analysis and correlation of ammoniarnslip with these parameters. Such data provide important feedback that can be used forrnprocess optimization or diagnosis. The results of a US Department of Energy Clean CoalrnPower Initiative (CPPI) supported study to examine such trends as well as the ability tornuse the measurement for real-time optimization will be discussed.
