A chronological account of the past 36 months of successful continuous monitoring of nitrogenrnoxides (NOX) levels of 0.1 to 2.1 parts per million by volume (ppm) will be presented. Originallyrncertified by the San Diego Air Pollution Control District in 2001, the CalCEMS(tm) emissionsrnmonitoring system has now been in continuous operation for over 36 months.rnThis paper will include a description of the cogeneration facility and the emissions controlrnsystem with respect to the NOx emission limit of 2.5 ppm. The installation and the "fine tuning"rnthat led up to the initial successful relative accuracy test audit (RATA) will then be presented,rnfollowed by a presentation of the RATA results.rnThe design of the continuous emissions monitoring system (CEMS) will then be presented,rntaking into account the key factors that apply to monitoring these extremely low NOXrnconcentrations. The steps required to collect a representative sample and transport it to thernanalyzers within the CEMS will be discussed. The factors in conditioning of the sample whilernmaintaining its integrity and the selection of analyzers will be presented.rnThe practical aspects of daily operation, serviceability and maintenance requirements will bernpresented as well.
