Liquid chromatography (LC) has played a significant role in the industrial analytical chemistry laboratory for over 30 years and is one of the most widely used analytical techniques in the pharmaceutical industry. Liquid chromatography has not been utilized as significantly as other analytical techniques for process analytics applications possibly due to a lack of awareness of its attributes and its commercial availability as an on-line technology. This paper will review the general attributes of liquid chromatography that have led to its broad application and acceptance as a laboratory technique. The general application requirements where these attributes can be advantageous over other on-line analytical techniques will be examined along with the capabilities of a typical, commercial on-line LC analyzer. Several published on-line LC applications will be discussed to examine how this technology's attributes have been used to generate value in various manufacturing processes.
