Moisture is an important contaminant in olefins product streams. The production of high-quality polymers requires the critical measurement of trace moisture. Moisture reduces the catalyst activity, reduces the overall reaction efficiency and degrades the quality of the final product. Diode laser absorption sensors offer significant opportunities and advantages for measurements of trace gas concentration due to their high sensitivity, high spectral resolution, fast time response and robustness. The TOLAS technology is advantageously used in the measurement of moisture in olefin product streams.rnThis paper will present the SpectraSensors SS2100 analyzer, which has been developed to measure trace moisture in Olefins product streams based on wavelength modulation spectroscopy. A water (H2O) transition line near 2.7um is selected due to its strong absorption strength, its relative isolation from background gases and the availability of laser sources. A differential measurement scheme is employed to eliminate the interference from background gases (e.g. ethylene). The sample system is mounted in an insulated and electrically heated (50 Deg. C) stainless steel enclosure to prevent condensation of moisture. The analyzer is calibrated using a NIST traceable chilled mirror hygrometer. A repeatability of less than 300 ppbvhas been demonstrated for a 0-3 ppmv measurement range. Demonstration experiments confirm the sensitivity and accuracy of the analyzer.
