Effect of Humidity and Cyclic Heat on the Static and Dynamic Performance of Composite-Based Lightweight Materials

This study investigates the effect of the environmental factors on variousrncombinations of composite-based lightweight materials, joining methods on the staticrnand dynamic performance of single lap joints. Studied joining methods includernbonding-only, bolting-only, and hybrid bonding-and-bolting. Durability performancernis determined under a cyclic load that fluctuates between 67.5% and 75% of the staticrnload capacity at ambient environmental conditions. Adherends’ material combinationsrnin this study include Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composite, magnesiumrn(Mg), and aluminum (Al). A commercially available adhesive is used for bondedonlyrnand hybrid-bonded-and bolted test joints. The effect of cyclic heat at either highrnor low relative humidity (RH) is investigated. Temperature profile cycles betweenrn20° C and 80° C at a constant relative humidity level of either 20% RH or 85% RH.rnDiscussion of the results, observations, and conclusions are provided.
