This paper summarizes an experimental effort to characterize the compression andrnin-plane shear behavior of two different thermoplastic composites reinforced withrnaramid fabrics and long glass fibers, respectively. The combined loading compressionrnand the V-notched rail shear test approaches described in the ASTM standards werernemployed in the investigation. For the compression behavior, it was observed that therntwo composite materials investigated exhibited similar stiffness behavior, as well asrnfailure mode. It was demonstrated that molding induced flow resulted in significantrnanisotropic behavior for the long fiber thermoplastic composite in compression. In thernin-plane shear test, the engineering shear strain was measured by two strain gaugesrnplaced at ±45° with respect to the loading direction. It was observed that bothrncomposites exhibited non-linear stress-strain behavior but failed at different strainrnvalues. In particular, the aramid fabric laminates did not break during testing.rnFurthermore, two representative failure modes were identified for the two types ofrncomposites tested.
