This study develops a simplified estimation methodrnfor calculating the effective opening area of automaticallyrnoperated entrance doors and the winter airflowrnrate into entrance halls due to the stack effect. Thernrelationships between the number of people passingrnthrough the doors and the average opening area ratiornwere obtained from detailed simulations of a varietyrnof different types of doors, and were approximated byrnequations. The relationships between the effectivernentrance door opening areas and the outdoor airflowrnrates were determined by solving air balance equationsrnfor each of the six types of buildings. These relationshipsrnwere also approximated by equations. Thernproposed estimation method, utilizing these two kindsrnof approximation equations, was used to examine thernchanges in the winter outdoor airflow rate throughrnthe entrance doors on a weekday for six different buildings.rnThis method helps designers plan entrances andrndetermine the proper heating equipment capacity.
