There are two main issues to be resolved inrnorder that design tools can be used in cooperativernmode, each communicating with the other. Firstly,rnthere is a need to put in place a consistent productrnmodel of a building and its systems from whichrndisparate design tools can obtain their inputs andrnreturn their outputs. Secondly, there is thernrequirement to manage the transactions betweenrnusers and design tools. Tbese issues were addressedrnwithin the European COMBINE project. This paperrnis concerned with the latter issue. It describes thernbasis and operation of an intelligent, integratedrnbuilding design system, or IEBDS, which is able torncoordinate designer-to-designer,rndesigner-to-application andrnapplication-to-application transactions, against rulesrnwhich describe the purpose of a given designrnsession. The HBDS is able to address 'shallow'rncontrol, where the design tools are sequenced, andrn'deep' control, where knowledge is introduced inrnrelation to design purpose so that design tool use isrnconstrained within a given design session.
