Yakushima (Yaku Island) is a sparsely inhabited island located approximately 60 km south of the Sata Misaki promontory on the southern tip of Kyushu, Kagoshima, perfecture in Japan. The island is roughly circular in shape, having a total surface area of 503 km~2 and a circumference of 132 km. yakushima is characteristically warm and wet, with an average annual rainfall of 4,600 mm. Because of its impressive biological diversity and ancient Yakusugi forest, the ishand was placed on the world Heritage Natural Property List on December 11,1993.
