During the much wetter than usual fall and winter of 1998-1999, the Washington state Department of Transportation (WSDO) and the Port of seattle tested several applications of polymers as conustruction site experimental erosion and sediment control best management practices (BMPs). As a soil erosion prevention BMP, WSDOT showed that anionic polyacrylamide (PAM, Chemco 9836A) applied to soils in wet and dry applications effectively reduced turbidity in runoff from test plots and highway construction sites. Optimal application rates were generally less than 1 kg/ha (about 1 lb/ac), costing a few dollars per hectare. Less effective results wer found at higher applications rates. Runoff from PAM-treated soils showed no acute or cronic toxicity to a daphnid (water flea) species tested in situ.
