It is widely known that climate-driven loss of Arctic searnice has occurred in the past decade. And in just the pastrnfew years a synoptic view of significant ice thicknessrnchanges (dominated by thinning and volume loss)rnacross the Arctic Ocean has been provided by variousrninvestigations using ICESat and Envisat altimetry.rnContinued Arctic-wide observation of this (presumablyrnsecular) thinning, or other thickness changes, will bernprovided for the next 3 to 5 years by the SyntheticrnAperture Interferometric Radar Altimeter (SIRAL)rnonboard CryoSat-2 as well as the suite of airbornerninstruments used by NASA's Operation IceBridge. OnrnApril 20 - just 12 days after the CryoSat-2 launch -rnduring the IceBridge Spring 2010 campaign and inrncoordination with ESA, the NASA DC-8 flew preciselyrnalong some 670 km of a CryoSat-2 ground-track in thernnorthernmost Arctic Ocean. The DC-8 collectedrnscanning laser Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM)rndata as well as a number of other measurementsrnincluding DMS imagery, gravity, lidar and radarrnaltimetry, including snow radar, which are virtuallyrncoincident and nearly simultaneous with SAR-modernSIRAL data collected by CryoSat-2. We present anrnoverview of this first CryoSat-2 underflight and initialrncomparative analyses of these CryoSat-2 data and therncoincident airborne digital imagery and laser altimetryrnin an effort to discriminate leads using L1B CryoSat-2rnparameters. Discrimination between leads in thernCryoSat SIRAL data is the first step towards precisernestimates of sea ice freeboard.
