A disposal criticality methodology (Ref.1) is being developed by the Waste Package Development Department (WPDD) of the Yucca Mountain Project to provide a consistent analytical approach for performing neutronic analyses relevant to long-term geologic disposal of high-level radioactive waste.The methodology for evaluating nuclear performance of repository components,specifically the waste packages,requires knowledge of the repository nuclide inventory.The methodology must be capable of predicting individual assembly nuclide inventories and their associated reactivity to support criticality safety and other nuclear performance evaluations required to license a long-term geologic repository.The determination of bias,uncertainty,and margin associated with teh calculations of nuclide inventory and reactivity is an integral component of the methodology development.Commercial reactor critical (CRC) benchmark evaluations help provide a basis for determining the bias and uncertainty associated with depletion,buildup,decay,and reactivity calculations that are a part of the methodology.This paper summarizes a subset of the CRC benchmark evaluations performed on pressurized water reactor (PWR) configurations.
