The saturated zone (SZ) beneath and downgradient from the potential repository block at Yucca Mountain will be the final barrier for the release of radionuclides to the environment.Long-term performance of the potential repository will be enhanced if dilution of released radionuclides will be enhanced if dilution of released radionuclides occurs within the SZ beneath the repository block and along downgradient flow paths prior to ground-water discharge.The natural lateral and vertical variations in dissolved ion and isotopic compositions of ground water can be used to estimate the depth of mixing within the upper part of the SZ and to define the loci of flow paths downgradient from the potential repository.This work was conducted for the Department of Energy by the U.S.Geological Survey under Interagency Agreement DE-AI08-92NV10874.
