The MTG instruments are located on a new generationrnof GEO SC, 3 axes stabilized. The scanning of thernEarth along the E/W and the S/N directions shall bernensured by the Scan Mechanisms located ahead thernInstruments, corresponding to challenging pointingrnrequirements. Key requirements are: scan angularrnvelocity stability (accurate slope and low jitter),rnangular pointing restitution accuracy (angular pointingrnknowledge) and overall pointing position accuracyrnwith respect to the commanded position. All thesernperformances are in the μrad – or even sub μrad - rangernover a wide angular stroke, corresponding tornchallenging capabilities.rnIn order to secure the MTG development on theserntopics, pre-development activities were initiated underrnESA funding, one development was being completedrnby SENER under ASTRIUM prime contractor shiprn(France and finally Germany). SENER subcontractedrnCEDRAT for motor development and TNO asrninterferometer and optical consultant, meanwhilernASTRIUM subcontracted the encoder activity tornCODECHAMP.rnThe performances finally demonstrated by thernBreadboard indicate how the target performances arernachieved, together with the lessons learnt which are ofrnparamount importance to further secure therndevelopment of the MTG mission.
