The University of Waterloo’s Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology (CPATT) is committedrnto working with public and private sector partners to develop sustainable technologies. Recycled AsphaltrnShingles (RAS) is a product that contains approximately 30 percent asphalt cement by mass. Sources ofrnRAS include trimmings from shingle insulation and decommissioned shingle roofs. Reuse of thesernmaterials leads to financial savings through avoidance of disposal costs and reduction of the amount ofrnvirgin asphalt binder required in Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). This paper presents results from a recent studyrninvolving Miller Paving Limited, CPATT, and Materials Manufacturing Ontario (MMO) on the usage ofrnRAS in common Ontario HMA.rnThis paper involves an evaluation of the properties of a surface course mix HL3 containing 1.5 percentrnRAS. This mix was placed at the CPATT Test Track in 2009. In addition, a comprehensive performancerncomparison of the streets that were paved in the Town of Markham, Ontario in 2007 is presented in thisrnpaper. Finally, an environmental life cycle assessment also is presented which uses the PaLATE software.rnOverall, this paper shares some best practices on key aspects of effectively using Recycled AsphaltrnShingles.
