Preliminary Findings from Saskatchewan’s Asphalt Rubber Project

Use of crumb rubber as an additive in asphalt concrete mixes has been predominantly limited to milderrnclimates and the performance of asphalt rubber pavements in Canada has been variable. Some of thernbenefits of rubber asphalt are thought to be improved resistance to cracking and improved structuralrncapacity, which in turn may allow reduction of structural layer thickness. Since these concepts are ofrninterest to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure (MHI), an asphalt rubber pavementrnwas designed and constructed on Highway 11, near Findlater, as part of a rehabilitation strategy for thisrnstructural asphalt concrete pavement highway.rnTest sections were constructed in July 2005 to evaluate the effectiveness of the rubber asphalt mix as arnrehabilitation overlay treatment for typical Saskatchewan asphalt concrete pavements, in comparison tornthe dense-graded asphalt mixes used by MHI. Laboratory testing was carried out to complement the fieldrnevaluation, and to quantify the mechanistic properties of the asphalt rubber mix. As well, structural fieldrntesting was performed to evaluate in-situ properties of the asphalt rubber and the conventional dense-gradedrnasphalt mix.rnTo date both the conventional mix and the asphalt rubber are performing well in the field. Based on thernlaboratory characterization results, minimal difference in material properties was observed between thernconventional asphalt mix and asphalt rubber mix at 20°C. Additionally, the non-destructive structuralrncharacterization results indicate that to date the conventional mix and the asphalt rubber are performingrncomparably in terms of deflections.
