It has been found that there may be significant differences in bulk relative density when fine aggregate isrntested with the fines (minus 75 μm) removed by washing as compared to testing when the fines arernpresent. These differences in density can be large and can result in errors in calculating concrete andrnasphalt mixture characteristics. A study was conducted to investigate the effect of fines on fine aggregaternabsorption and bulk relative density and, if possible, determine the cause of any difference. It was foundrnthat the amount of the difference depends on the amount of the fines present and probably on the nature ofrnthe fines. The high absorption and low bulk relative density values are caused by the fines promoting thernformation of agglomerations of artificial aggregate particles as the sample is being stirred during thernachievement of the saturated surface dry condition. These artificial aggregate particles have porosity inrnand of themselves and reach a saturated surface dry condition. The porosity (absorption) and bulk relativerndensity measured is a combination of not only the individual grains in the fine aggregate but also of thernartificial particles. Testing fine aggregates with high fines present may often result in incorrect density andrnabsorption values.
