The aim of this paper is to illustrate how formal specifications for collaborative interactive systems might be written. Specifically we choose to specify a collaborative editor. The full specification of the system follows Hussey and Carrington's adaptation of Foley and van Dam's work, and has three parts: the semantics of the system; the syntax of the system; the semantics of the awareness aspects of the system. The third aspect of the specification is required in order to say what awareness users should have of each other and of the system. This is a new requirement that comes from the fact that we are dealing with collaborative systems in which users need to know about one another.
