A particular problem which arises when putting high power lasers in the field is poweringrnthem while still maintaining mobility. Battery technology has been given a huge push by the autornindustry; and now has progressed to a level in which it should be given serious consideration.rnThis experiment shows that, with off-the-shelf batteries, these high power lasers can be poweredrnfor prolonged periods of time.rnAt this preliminary stage only the safety and energy capacity are considered in the choicernof battery packs. A Nickel-Metal Hydride battery pack was chosen due to its being relatively safernto operate and its moderate energy capacity. The battery packs will initially have a capacity ofrnabout 3kWh. The safety procedure and handling of this high energy capacity medium wasrnexplored and in addition the power supply was also investigated for any noise that may causerndamage to the laser diode. A laser diode from a high power laser diode test bed being built for arnJTO(Joint Technology Office) project will be used as the test laser.
