COPAR (Combining Optimism and Pessimism in AccessingrnReplicas) is a distributed transaction system that managesrnupdates for widely-scattered nodes containing replicasrnof a database of resource counts. The distinguishingrnfeature is that the nodes of the system are connected byrna high-latency, low-bandwidth, or congested network. Anrnexample is the distribution of relief supplies in a large-scalerndisaster situation.rnTo implement responses to allocation and deallocationrnrequests at a particular node in a timely manner, therndatabase of available resources is replicated at each node.rnThis article describes the system architecture, a flaw in thernsystem’s software uncovered during ongoing research, andrnhow the flaw was fixed. Also provided is a comparison ofrnthe post-fix performance of the system with the original.
