For many real-time media streams on the Internet today,rnit is necessary to provide authentication, data integrity,rnand non-repudiation. It is important to be able to balancernthe need for security with the constraints of the environment,rnwhere data must be delivered in a limited amountrnof time. This paper develops a novel method of achievingrndata authentication, based on previous work done in thernarea of hash-chaining authentication schemes. Theoreticalrnand simulated results are presented, showing that the newrnmethod, the modified butterfly scheme, outperforms similarrnschemes such as the butterfly scheme, using the samernamount of overhead.
