JPL is providing a software defined radio (SDR) that willrnfly on the International Space Station (ISS) as part of thernCoNNeCT project under NASA's SCaN program. ThernSDR consists of several modules including a BasebandrnProcessor Module (BPM) and a GPS Module (GPSM).rnThe BPM executes applications (waveforms) consistingrnof software components for the embedded SPARCrnprocessor and logic for two Virtex II Field ProgrammablernGate Arrays (FPGAs) that operate on data received fromrnthe GPSM. GPS waveforms on the SDR are enabled byrnan L-Band antenna, low noise amplifier (LNA), and thernGPSM that performs quadrature downconversion at L1,rnL2, and L5. The GPS waveform for the JPL SDRrnwill acquire and track L1 C/A, L2C, and L5 GPS signalsrnfrom a CoNNeCT platform on ISS, providing the bestrnGPS-based positioning of ISS achieved to date, the firstrnuse of multiple frequency GPS on ISS, and potentiallyrnthe first L5 signal tracking from space. The system willrnalso enable various radiometric investigations on ISS suchrnas local multipath or ISS dynamic behaviorrncharacterization. In following the software-definedrnmodel, this work will create a highly portable GPSrnsoftware and firmware package that can be adapted tornanother platform with the necessary processor and FPGArncapability. This paper also describes ISS applications forrnthe JPL CoNNeCT SDR GPS waveform, possibilities for future global navigation satellite system (GNSS) trackingrndevelopment, and the applicability of the waveformrncomponents to other space navigation applications.
