The Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS), a Japanesernsatellite navigation system, broadcasts GPS-interoperablernsignals and augmentation signals as well as originalrnJapanese signals from an inclined, ellipticalrngeosynchronous orbit. Using this system, users aroundrnJapan and Oceania can make use of seamless positioning,rnnavigation, and timing services, even in urban canyonsrnand mountainous areas. A government policy supports thernproject to promote the use of geographical spatialrninformation linked to satellite-based navigation for arnwealthy and secure life in accordance with the rapidrnincrease of satellite navigation users nationwide. Tornsupport that policy, JAXA is in charge of developing thernfirst stage of the QZSS in collaboration with relatedrnministries and national research institutes.rnThe first satellite of the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System,rnMICHIBIKI, was successfully launched on September 11,rn2010, by a Japanese H2A launch vehicle. After a series ofrnorbit-raising and phase adjustment maneuvers, thernsatellite reached its operational orbit on September 27.rnOn-orbit checkout was started right after insertion of thernoperational orbit. All satellite system functions as well asrnfunctions of the newly developed on-ground controlrnsystem have been verified for 3 months. This paperrnsummarizes the design of the QZSS and describes the firstrnresults of the on-orbit checkout of the QZSS withrnparticular emphasis on integrated system performance,rnnot only of the flight segment but also of the groundrncontrol segment.
