The DNA project promises to provide Japan with a world leading capability in neutron spectroscopy on the nanosecond time scale. It will provide Japanese researchers an unprecedented capability to study key interactions in a wide variety of important materials. For example, DNA can be used to study the interaction of water and other glass forming molecules with proteins which may lead to an improved understanding of extending the shelf-life of biotechnology products. It will allow researchers to determine the atomic scale diffusion of hydrogen in potential hydrogen storage materials which is key to enhancing the charging and discharging of hydrogen storage systems.
