Synthetic plastics account for consumption of 7% of fossil fuels worldwide during the era of energy shortage. Production of these plastics increases carbon emission. Moreover, most of plastic products are non-degradable and discarded as wastes. All of these adversary consequences prompt opportunities to seek developing environmentally friendly renewable biomass for manufacturing of “green” plastics. Plants are among most abundant renewable resources for the production of bioenergy and biomaterials, and are also considered as promising feedstock to produce green plastics. We have used GUM ROSIN, a low-cost, abundant, environmentally friendly natural resource, as an alternative feedstock to prepare renewable plastics. Given our fundamental knowledge of the monomers for renewable polymers, there is a much need to explore in the area of value-added renewable green plastics and polymer composites from GUM ROSIN. Our approach employs a combination of material design, monomer derivatization, polymer synthesis, and material characterization, to create the first prototypes of “rosin-derived” renewable plastics.
