Introduction and Drought-Resistance Evaluation of Ten Iris Species

In order to screen water-saving iris species in Wuhan area, an experiment was conducted to study the effect of drought stress on the antioxidant enzyme activity and non-enzyme substances in ten introduced iris species. Physiological and biochemical indexes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), and non-enzyme substances, soluble sugar, malondialdehyde (MDA) and proline were investigated.The drought tolerance of different cultivars of iris was evaluated synthetically by principal component analysis and subordinate function. The results showed that among the 10 cultivars, Iris germanica 'Gold boy' showed the highest drought tolerance one while Iris ensata showed the lowest one. The drought tolerance predicting regression equation established by activity of electrical conductivity,contents of chlorophyll, soluble sugar and MDA, could be used to evaluate drought tolerance of other iris species.
