摘要

Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is gradually gaining importance in Higher Education. Several academic and research institutions are now working on pilot projects to experiment with PKI deployment and usage in their environments. Much of this effort is outsourced to a third party. In this paper, we propose an architecture that is customized to the needs of a research/academic institution. In addition to the security features needed for the day-to-day operations of a research/academic institution, our architecture also provides for a secure document storage facility to store and retrieve confidential data pertaining to different users. We have also identified some important application areas relevant to end-users. We have implemented a prototype of the architecture using open source technology. We find this technology to be much more amenable to experiment with new architectural ideas.
