HREM study of nanostructure of calcium silicate hydrate gels in cement paste

Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) Gel is the principal reaction product of Portland cement and water. However, a precise structure of C-S-H is not determined yet due to the lack of long-range crystallinity. C-S-H is believed to be nearly amorphous (i.e. gel-like). It is found that the Ca:Si ratio of C-S-H varies with the area measured, with the value from 0.6 to 2, but its average Ca:Si ratio is approx 1.7. Many models have been proposed to expalin the complex C-S-H gel structure and its Ca:Si ratio fluctuations. The solid solution model, considers C-S-H as a solid solution between tobermorite and calcium hydroxide. This model can explain some of the crystal chemical observation of C-S-H, however it is not clear if the model could be extended to the higher limits of local Ca:Si ratios (>2.0) that are observed in the C-S-H gel phase. The nanophasic model considers C-S-H to consist of a mixture of tobemorite and jennite structural elements on the nanometer scale. This model can explain many of the crystal chemical observation, in particular, it accounts for the importance of the presence of strong fluctuations in the local Ca:Si ratio. However, the model requires that C-S-H is a nanoheterogeneous system.
