The North American optical cable market is passing the 10-year milestone of the commercial availability of completely dry, or 'gel-free', optical cable for the outside plant. This is an appropriate time to reflect on the field performance of these cables, as well as the industry standards that have evolved for this technology. This paper will explore the unique design challenges brought about by the switch to dry waterblocking materials, more specifically Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP) as well as how the cables on the market today meet those challenges. These challenges include wetting and freezing of the waterblocking materials and the need to create a coupling mechanism between fibers and their protective buffer tubes without a viscous medium. New testing requirements to address field conditions have been adopted by major standards bodies to ensure consistent performance within the industry. In addition, this paper will note that in the 10 years since commercial introduction of these cables, there have been no reports of field issues due to the substitution of gels by Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP).
