An experimental study to determine the factors that affect the ultimate failurernload of a mechanically fastened glass-fibre reinforced thermoplastic composite/steelrnbolted joints subjected to peel loading is presented. The composite wasrnmanufactured from a polyolefin resin with 35% short glass fibers by injectionrnmolding. A test matrix was designed with three design factors (washer thicknessrnand outer diameter, peel angle) at three levels each at room temperature. Alternaternfastening systems to single flat washer were investigated which consisted of arnstacked steel on steel washer and a stacked steel on an elastomer washer. Thernalternate designs were tested at one peel angle and temperature. The observedrnfailure modes were bearing failure, cross-section fracture at the washer's edge andrnfracture failure across the bolt hole in the specimen. It was observed that largerrnfailure loads in peel were achieved when the failure occurred as fracture through thernbolt hole.
