Ballistocardiography (BCG) is a technique that had arnlarge interest in cardiology between the fifties andrneighties. Typically BCG consisted in the recording ofrnmechanical acceleration (Acc), caused by cardiacrnactivity, on a subject lying on a table. As Acc wasrnrecorded only in the 2-dimensions (2D) of the horizontalrnplane, the antero-posterior (Z-axis) component wasrnoften neglected. From past experiments conducted inrnspace [1,2] it was suggested that this component wasrncomparable in magnitude to the other two and thatrnBallistocardiography should be recorded in threedimensionsrn(3D). These observations and the recentrnmodest regain of interest in the BCG technique were thernstarting point of the B3D project selected by ESA forrnthe definition phase after the AO-2009.rnWe recorded 3D Acc at various positions on the surfacernof the body (close to the centre of mass (CM), at thernapex of the heart and on the sternum) of 8 healthyrnvolunteers during free floating periods of parabolicrnflight (PF) manoeuvre (ESA 55th and DLR 19th PFrncampaigns conducted on-board the A300-zéroGrnairplane of NOVESPACE). Out of the many recordingsrncollected, only a very limited number provided bodyrnAcc free from artefacts. Nevertheless, our results showrnthat Seismocardiograms (SCG) and Ballistocardiogramsrn(BCG) waves were qualitatively and quantitativelyrncomparable in the frontal plane while larger differencesrnwere present along the antero-posterior component. Ourrnlimited number of artefact free episodes demonstratesrnthe intrinsic difficulties of 3D recordings of SCG andrnBCG in PF and thus the need for a study in sustainedrnmicrogravity. Moreover, our results confirm that thernventro-dorsal component of BCG is of similarrnamplitude as the other two which further demonstratesrnthat the three components are essential to provide arnphysiological interpretation of BCG and SCG signals.
