摘要

The history of human space flight and analogue andrnground-based space science is alive with art. Artists, rnscientists and engineers working together build uponrndiverse frameworks of understanding, but also sharerntools and processes of investigation. By jointly steppingrninto new worlds and territories – with common purposernand mutual respect for curiosity – there emergernopportunities for encounters that offer an alternativernviewpoint on things. Artists can introduce a metaperspectivern(taking a step back and inquiring into thernpractice of research), a historical, conceptual orrnaesthetic view, all of which can invite those who arernresearchers, engineers and inventors toward new insightrnand discovery. Scientist’s methods of inquiry and theirrnparticular ways of dealing with natural phenomena andrntechnology can also be a great source of inspiration forrnartists. Often with technical curiosity, artists can alsorncontribute to concrete R&D just as science can directlyrnimpact art and inform aesthetics. So combined, therndifferent philosophies, the experiments and the fieldrnwork can lead to collaborative outcomes that arernpositively contributing to research, exploration andrnadvancement.rnArtist and biologist Angelo Vermeulen has beenrnworking together with the European Space Agencyrn(ESA) MELiSSA research program since 2009. Inrnresponse to the ESA invitation to reflect on therndevelopment of future space habitats, Vermeulen set uprnSEAD (Space Ecologies Art & Design), a platform forrnartistic research on the transfer of terrestrial ecosystemsrnto space to facilitate space settlement. Artist and diverrnSarah Jane Pell has been working with the underwaterrntechnology and biotechnology community since 2003.rnShe joined NASA’s Luna Gaia team and the League ofrnNew World Explorers analogue space subsea habitatrnexploration mission Atlantica in 2006.rnCurrent and future work by these, and similarrnpartnerships, illustrates a dynamic culture of fieldwork, rnlab protocols/studio practice, research and development, rnexperimentation, demonstration/exhibition, publicationrnand dissemination made possible by including artists inrnthe fields of science and engineering. As ‘real’rncollaborators, artists can truly move science andrnengineering forward; and by co-creating art works, theyrncan improve science and technology communication.rnCollaboration between the arts and science shouldrntherefore be encouraged and fostered.
