The Simbox experiment was the first joint German-rnChinese space project. In this context Arabidopsisrnthaliana cell cultures were exposed to microgravity forrna 17-day period. To carry out a successful spacernmission, diverse hardware tests were performed inrnadvance. Due to the limited oxygen supply inside thernhardware units, cells were fixed after 5 days underrnmicrogravity conditions. As a control, samples werernexposed in an on-board 1g reference centrifuge. Torninvestigate the space effect, a ground-based study wasrnperformed with the same hardware and identicalrnexperimental procedures. As we were able to obtainrnhigh quality RNA from the RNAlater quenchedrnsamples, we used the Affymetrix Arabidopsis genomernarray for a transcriptome analysis. Our experimentrnaimed at the identification of plant genes that wererndifferentially expressed after long-term exposure tornmicrogravity. Pair-wise comparison of flight samplesrnwith 1g controls revealed the largest differencesrnbetween space 1g and ground 1g controls.
