Our aims were: 1) to assess the effects of 5-days ofrnstrict head-down (-6 degrees) bed-rest (BR)rndeconditioning on left ventricular (LV) size and mass byrnechocardiography; 2) to test the effectiveness ofrnartificial gravity (AG) to prevent LV changes. Methods.rnTwelve healthy men (mean age 33±7) were enrolled in arncross-over design: each subject repeated the BRrn(MEDES, Toulouse) without countermeasures (CTRL),rnwith AG applied daily for 30’ continuously (AG1), andrnfor 30’ intermittently (AG2). Transthoracicrnechocardiography (iE33, Philips) was performed beforern(BCD-5), at the end of BR (R+0), and 3 days afterrn(R+2). Two-way ANOVA with repeated measures wasrnapplied. Results. Despite the smaller changes in AG1rnand AG2, no differences were found between groupsrnand interactions. Cardiac adaptation to deconditioningrnaffected LV mass and volumes, and AGrncountermeasure, when applied either continuously orrnintermittently, was not effective in preventing their loss.
