The dramatic growth in GPS study, research, de-velopment and use has brought to the fore the issue of commonality in the use of its basic concepts. While we intuitively know what we mean by accu-racy, integrity, availability, and continuity of function, we find it harder to properly define these concepts and have consequently produced definitions which are neither adequate nor equivalent.rnThe purpose of this paper is to analyze these four basic concepts using a set of five criteria that are usually applied to mathematical definitions. We will illustrate that commonly found definitions of the four GPS concepts fail to satisfy the applied criteria. We will try to make the case that ION establishes a definitions panel to institute some order in the fast evolving GPS scientific field.
