The Montshire Museum of Science, Norwich, Vermont recently underwent a major buildingrnrenovation resulting in a large ±4000 cu. meter reverberant space occupied by a wide variety ofrnscience exhibits and often filled with many excited and noisy children. The reception desk andrnadministrative center, however, was placed within this large space and was subjected torncontinuous high noise levels which precluded normal speech communication between the staffrnmembers and visitors. The Speech Interference Level (SIL) was determined to exceed acceptedrncriteria by approximately 10 dB with a measured SIL of 60 to 63 dB. The purpose of this paper isrnto (1) detail the design and implementation of an acoustic canopy over the reception area whichrnoccupies approximately 1% of the total volume and (2) present the improvements achieved in thernreception area including reductions in noise levels and improvements in speech communication.rnStaff members may now enjoy a lower background noise of distant children whilerncommunicating effectively with each other and visitors. The design can be readily adapted to arnvariety of community and industrial applications in which open accessibility to the quiet space isrnrequired.
