The current status of standardization activities related to a number of different programming languages of interest for industrial computers is reviewed. The focus of the paper is on major languages with are extensions of general-purpose computer languages, rather than on the "pure" industrial computer languages designed uniquely for this application. The rationale behind this focus, is discussed along with the criteria for successful acceptance of this standardization work. In addition, the role of language standards in solving the future challenges of programming is considered.
