摘要

The requirement for water quality data is discussed including essential variables required for on-line control such as dissolved oxygen level and sludge blanket level in the case of waste water treatment, and coagulant dose and chlorination in the case of water treatment. Additionally the role of on-line monitoring in the context of appraising remedial measures undertaken to protect water courses and in the long term planning of future treatment facilities is also discussed. So too is equipment availability discussed and also recent sensor developments such as new optical methods of measurement and the role of chemically sensitive semi-conductors in the measurement of organics, possibly hazardous to human health, oils, heavy metals and toxicity. Finally, relevant methods of data processing and information transfer are discussed in the context of effective management of treatment facilities and environmental protection.
