Shot peening is a cold working, surface-treatment process which requires accurate positional control of the workpiece. The process is becoming more automated and the varied nature of the workpieces suggests that they should be handled, positioned and controlled by robots. This will have the added advantage of removing the human operator from the dirty and hazardous atmosphere created by the process. In order to make the process suitable for robotic operation, accurate measurement and control of both the velocity and concentration of the shot is required. This paper describes such a system.rnThe control is achieved by measuring the mean particle velocity and concentration using non-intrusive capacitance transducers. These signals are fed into a microcomputer which calculates the optimum flow conditions and duration of the peening process. The computer is also used for closed loop regulation of the solids flow and velocity. The valves controlling the solids flow and velocity interact very strongly and therefore a multivariable control algorithm is incorporated in the computer to give accurate control and rapid response.rnTypical results obtained using a prototype shot peening plant are described.
