Kinetic promotion of ozonation using the KI-I_2 system as a catalyst couple to facilitate air and water pollutant removal has been studied. Such a catalytic system is found to be effective in an aqueous scrubber design for the removal of H_2S or SO_2 from effluent discharges. The scrubber liquid consisted of a neutral KI-I_2 aqueous solution. The air effluent containing H_2S or SO_2 is contacted with the scrubber solution in a packed column section in which the pollutant is rapidly oxidized by I_2. The solution is recirculated and ozonated, whereby I_2 is regenerated by the KI-O_3 reaction.
