Ozone application as an ultimate or penultimate unit in the new Westerly Physical-Chemical Treatment Plant has been evaluated to determine the effectiveness of ozone as a disinfectant and to improve the performance of the plant with regard to organic removal. The performance of the up-stream units as well as the wide variation in waste-water characteristics had a negative impact on ozone application. This paper discusses the feasibility of such application, alternative solutions and other modes of operation to be considered which could make ozone application an attractive option.
