Review of the published literature indicates that ozonation of phenol can produce formic acid, oxalic acid, carbon dioxide, catechol, o-quinone cis, cis-muconic acid, and other reaction products. Ozonation products of phenol were shown to be non-toxic to blue gills, diatoms and mayfly larvae. Injections of these products into frogs and rabbits produced no toxic or cumulative effects.rnCase histories are discussed of operational ozone treatment processes for phenol-containing effluents from fiber board manufacturing, thermoplastic resin manufacturing, paper mills, coke plants, oil refineries, and for brewery influents and potable water supplies.
