Data obtained from pilot plant studies have prompted the city of Monroe, Michigan to install ozonation facilities for odor and taste control in its 18 mgd potable water system. In addition to effective odor and taste removal, many valuable secondary benefits are expected with ozone treatment. These include improved coagulation (with alum) and flocculation, partial disinfection, reduced chlorine demands, turbidity reduction and cyanide destruction. The ozone system will have a capacity of 450 lbs/day for application of up to 3.0 mg/l at design capacity of 18 mgd. Raw or pretreated water may be ozonated in a 3-stage, diffuser type contactor with a contact period of 9 minutes. Capital costs are somewhat higher than for more conventional treatments, but operating costs are expected to remain competitive.
